What is the Instagram algorithm and how does it work?
It’s a question that’s been causing a lot of consternation since Instagram ditched the chronological feed.
We’ll go over how the Instagram algorithm works for feed articles, stories, the Explore tab, IGTV videos, and Instagram Reels in this blog post.
What Is Instagram Algorithm
Instagram takes into account how likely you are to remark, like, save, or tap on a profile.
Instagram’s algorithm uses this data to assess how likely someone is to interact with a post, known as a score of interest, which impacts the order in which posts appear in their feed.
If you’ve spent any time on Instagram, you’re well aware that the algorithm can be fickle.
With the mystery comes questions like, “Why is my Instagram engagement down?” “Why am I receiving fewer Instagram likes?” and “Am I being shadowbanned?”
Keeping this in mind, ask yourself the following questions as you create your content and captions:
- Is it probable that this post will be liked or commented on?
- Is this a post that people will save and come back to?
- Is there a call to action in this post (for example, “Click the link in my bio”) that will encourage people to tap on your profile?
1. Try Reels
The algorithm is currently “boosting” Reels in the feed, according to Bay-area frog artist Rachel Reichenbach, so that more people notice and use this new tool. While Instagram hasn’t confirmed this, it makes sense—the company wants Reels to follow in the footsteps of TikTok’s success, just as Stories and IGTV did for Snapchat and YouTube, respectively.
Tips for posting Reels
- Do not recycle watermarked TikToks
- Shoot in vertical
- Use the bells and whistles: filters, camera effects, music, etc.
2. Make better use of hashtags
Don’t just slap #loveandlight and #instagood on everything to use hashtags effectively. Instead, conduct some research, dig around in your niche, and select hashtags that accurately represent what your post is about.
If you run a business that operates in a specific area, then make sure you are taking advantage of the Geotagging abilities of Instagram. Most companies will operate within a specific location, so if you want to be found by new followers in that area, it is crucial to use geotags.
4. Post carousels
While the Instagram algorithm does not specifically favor carousels, posts with higher engagement receive more reach. Carousel postings account for 17% of feed posts, with 3x the interaction and 1.4x the reach of other post categories, according to Hootsuite’s own data.
5. Don’t make your account shady
Take it from us: Instagram pods, Instagram follower purchases, and Instagram automation are all a waste of time.
Also, according to Instagram, the algorithm can tell when your account is being shady
6. Have a unique grid
Visual communication has a lot of power. Don’t underestimate it. Customers recognize a product first by its logo or color choice when it comes to presenting a brand. If we see a soft drink with a red label on the bottle, we know it’s the well-known Coca-Cola.
These are some of the most effective techniques to increase your Instagram following and promote your brand. Use these strategies to increase your Instagram following and establish a strong presence on the platform.
